Arthroscopic Bankart Rehab Protocol
Pre Surgery:
Regain passive ROM, avoid AB/ER positions of apprehension
Strength maintenance: isometrics in all planes
Post-op week one:
Ice: 10 minutes, 4X / day
Sling: used at all times except for pendulum exercises and bathing
ROM: Pendulums, elbow, wrist and hand stretching every 3 – 4 hours.
Post-op weeks two – four :
Sling: 4weeks postop and then gradually discontinue.
ROM: continue pendulums, begin PROM, limit flexion to 90 degrees and ER to 30, begin AAROM and transition to AROM with above limits.
Strength: begin isometric exercises at 3 weeks post-op, arm adducted to the side of body
sub-maximal flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, ext./int. rotation.
Post-op weeks five – eight:
ROM: gradually increase PROM with goal 90 -95% PROM at 10 to 12 weeks
Strength: Begin light resistive tubing exercises at 6 weeks, continue progressive cuff and periscapular strengthening program (protect ER); begin core trunk / lower extremity flexibility and strengthening
Avoid combined flexion and ER activities for 10 weeks
Post-op weeks nine – twelve:
ROM: normalize ROM by 12 weeks
Strength: continue gentle PREs, add dynamic stabilization exercises; begin transitioning to HEP.
Post-op weeks thirteen – sixteen:
Strength: begin progressive complete shoulder girdle strengthening exercises, begin light progressive plyometrics
Post-op weeks seventeen – twenty four:
Strength: continue PREs for entire shoulder girdle
Function: begin sports specific rehab at 16 weeks, may begin short-toss, golf short game; return to full activities at 5 to 6 months
